Remixing with Australian Literature

This exercise is designed to offer students a new way of developing their creativity while exploring the language of nineteenth-century Australian literature. Deep learning is a subset of machine learning that uses artificial neural networks to identify patterns. Where topic modeling is based on the likelihood of words co-occuring in a particular document, this application of deep learning seeks to match the patterns of natural language in response to input. This deep learning model, which was created by Google, has been trained (or taught the particularities of) the language of fiction published in nineteenth-century Australian newspapers. Students can begin a story and write with the deep learning model to discover new aspects of language while exploring an instance of the type of models that shape much of our current online practices and engagements.
